Design Process

The design process involves a rigorous exploration of typographic structure, with each guide utilizing a distinct grid system: manuscript, columnar, and deconstructed. This progression allows for a varied pacing that mirrors the complexity of the subject matter. To maintain visual interest, the project incorporates bold illustrations and intentional font pairings that reflect the textures and patterns found in the hairstyles themselves. The research phase focused on identifying ten specific styles and their historical origins to ensure the content remains informative and technically accurate.

Solution

The final solution delivers a multi-faceted narrative through three physical field guides that challenge the viewer's perception of Black hair. The first guide uses a manuscript grid to establish a foundational history, while the second employs a columnar grid to categorize specific styles and their modern implications. The final guide breaks away from traditional boundaries with a deconstructed grid, reflecting the innovation and constant evolution of Black hair culture. Through the use of high-quality print production and thoughtful material choices, the series functions as both a portable educational resource and a visual tribute to the complex roots of Black identity.
