Overview
Overview
Off the Grid is a series of four small zines that explore the conceptual and visual world of asemic writing through the lens of graffiti. Asemic writing is a wordless, open form of writing that has no specific semantic content, leaving the meaning entirely up to the personal interpretation of the viewer. The project focuses on graffiti as a primary example of this expression, as it appears in public spaces as a series of energetic marks that often defy legibility while conveying significant visual power. By treating these letterforms as abstract art, the series examines the relationship between public mark-making and the human desire to communicate through gesture rather than literal text.

Design Process
The design process involves investigating the expressive nature of illegible scripts and their commonalities with urban street art. Each of the four zines focuses on a different aspect of the writing's form, utilizing the active voice and dynamic layouts to represent the frantic energy of a tagger. The production involves a unique folding structure where each booklet unfolds to reveal a large-scale poster on the reverse side, showcasing a distinct style of graffiti.

Solution
Four distinct zines utilize specialized folds to transition from a small-format publication into a vibrant display of expressive typography. Upon unfolding, each piece reveals a unique form of graffiti, highlighting the variety of styles found in the urban environment. The result is a series that serves as both an educational guide to asemic theory and a visual celebration of the marks that define our cities, using the present tense to keep the narrative direct and engaging.
